Guyana Gov’t takes over Berbice Bridge

Citing a “threat to public safety” in light of the planned increase in tolls, the government yesterday assumed temporary control over the operation of the Berbice River Bridge and promised to retain the present toll structure as its seek to find an amicable resolution to its ongoing dispute with the  concessionaire, the Berbice Bridge Company Inc.

Irrespective of the callous plan of the Berbice Bridge Company Inc (BBCI) to impose draconian increases for the crossing of the Berbice Bridge, there can be no justification for the government’s seizure of the structure yesterday.

Rural constable accused of teen’s murder freed

Based on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), police yesterday withdrew the murder charge laid against Tony George, the Rural Constable who was implicated in the killing of 15-year-old Ricardo Singh, who was stabbed in July during an altercation at a wedding house along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

GAWU expects gov’t to abide by ruling that remaining severance be paid with interest

President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) Komal Chand says that he has no fear that the government or Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will not pay the interest on the remaining severance payments to laid off sugar workers, as was ordered by the High Court, despite it not being catered for in the supplementary funding that was approved by Parliament last week.

Essequibo continued their dominance in the Guyana Cricket Board Female Secondary Schools Under-17 T20 Franchise League with a 121-run win over Georgetown on Monday at the Demerara Cricket Club, Queenstown.

Two bandits held after stabbing man at Berbice Car Park

Two alleged bandits were yesterday apprehended and turned over to the police by personnel of a private security service after they robbed and stabbed a man on the Berbice Car Park.  According to police reports, the incident occurred around 10.45 pm on Sunday, moments after which the two men were apprehended by personnel of a private security service who arrived on the scene.

The illegal pistol and ammunition which were discovered by police on Monday morning.

Man wanted for robbery found with gun in crotch

Police have apprehended the suspect in an armed robbery committed late last month.  The man, whose name was not disclosed by police but is said to be a 30-year-old resident of Hadfield Street, Lodge, was being sought after he allegedly robbed a Sophia resident on October 22, 2018.
