A greens vendor was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman read the charges to David Bernard, 32, who pleaded not guilty.
The first charge against Bernard states that he had in his possession a 9mm pistol without being a licensed firearm holder on November 1st, at Broad Street, Charlestown,.
It was also alleged that on the very date the defendant had in his possession 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition without being a licensed firearm holder.
A third charge was read to the accused. It stated that he assaulted a female on the very date and at the very location.
Police prosecutor Quinn Harris told the court that a report was made by a woman, which led to the police visiting the area. Harris said Bernard put his hands into the crotch of his pants and pulled out the firearm mentioned in the charge and threw it to a zinc fence near him. The police, according to the facts, retrieved the weapon and showed the accused. He was later arrested and charged.
Magistrate Latchman later granted the accused $20,000 bail for the assault charge but remanded him to prison for the firearm and ammunition charges. The matters were then adjourned until November 8th.
