Police constable 23388 Oswin Argyle, who was the driver of a car that was involved in the fatal accident just over a week ago along the Bee Hive Public Road, has ended his life.
Argyle, 23, of Lot 24 Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, died on Monday at the Georgetown Public Hospital after reportedly ingesting a poisonous substance.
Argyle was the driver of vehicle PWW 5851, which was involved in an accident on October 29th, and which claimed the life of his passenger, Keiolla Fortune-Thomas, 27, of Clonbrook, East Coast Demerara.
Commander of ‘C’ Division, Calvin Brutus told Stabroek News that on Monday, the rank ran into the Vigilance Police Station and informed his colleagues that he had consumed a poisonous substance. Before ranks could have aided him, Brutus said Argyle fell to the ground and began bleeding from the mouth. He was immediately picked up and rushed to the city public hospital, where he succumbed while receiving medical attention.
The commander said that police are awaiting the results of an autopsy before declaring suicide as the cause of death.
Following the accident, Argyle was transferred to the Turkeyen Police Station, where he was performing duties.
Brutus assumed that the rank may have committed the act after he was unable to cope with the frustration which may have resulted from the accident. He, however related that no reports of suicidal thoughts or attempts by the constable were made to him.
It was reported by the police that the motor car, PWW 5851, was being driven at a fast rate and the driver lost control and collided with two utility poles situated along the road. A section of the car was subsequently submerged in a nearby trench.
As a result of the impact, Fortune-Thomas sustained serious injuries to her body and was rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital for medical attention. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Argyle, who received minor injuries, also received medical attention at the facility and was discharged.
