If you are a fan of jaw-dropping, supersonic performances, then the South Dakota Circuit was the place to be yesterday.
There, speed demons Andrew King, Calvin Ming, Kristian Jeffrey and Team Mohamed’s bikers thrilled the fans with scorching displays of racing in the finale of the much-hyped Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) Ignite Race meet.
King reigned supreme after putting on a tactical clinic to win ahead of Rupie Sewjattan and Mark Vieira who started the final day on top the points standing to take the spoils in the Group 4 class.
Vieira in his RX-8 had controlled the races in the early stages, powering ahead and looked destined for victory until King hunted him down in the latter stages.
King produced a silky smooth drive through the gooseneck to bridge the early advantage. Coming out of the straightaway, King zoomed past Vieira on the inside of the club house turn and it was rear light viewing for the pack from there onwards.
With two outstanding wins and a second place finish, it allowed the seasoned veteran King to overtake Vieira to win the now standalone Group 4 title.
Vieira’s finished fifth in races two and three and placed third in race one which was nowhere near good enough to see him preserve his lead which he ceded to King.
Guyana’s Ming won two of the three Radical races, resetting the lap record during each victory but Jeffrey turned in a gutsy performance to claim victory in the other Radical showdown.
In the first win, Ming lowered Team Mohamed’s Matthew Truelove’s circuit record time of 33.3 by three thousandths of a second (33.297 seconds).
In the second Radical race, Jeffrey, started in eighth position due to the reversed grid rule of the Radicals but overcame the entire field including a last turn drift past Ming on the gooseneck for an entertaining win.
Ming, who was on pole for the final Radical race, led the field from start to finish and Jeffrey was unable to get past his fellow countryman who lowered the circuit record once again with a blazing fast lap of 33.121 seconds.
Elsewhere on the track, the two-wheeled daredevils from Team Mohamed’s Enterprise were the most successful with three first place finishes, two seconds and two thirds in the Super sport and Super stock classes combined.
It would have easily been a one-two-three finish in each of races but Richard Cooper and Harry Truelove both fell off their cycle in the opening race and were unable to recover from the nasty spill.
The seasoned riders thrilled fans and they were a joy to watch on the track.
Among other standout performers were Shan Seejattan clean sweeping the Group Two races; Rene Tucker leading the grid in the Street Bike races and Ronald Wortman being crowned the CMRC Group Three champion.
The official points standing will be disclosed tonight during the presentation ceremony at the Princess Ramada.
