Four title contenders, yesterday, recorded wins in the latest round of the New Building Society (NBS), Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) forty overs tournament in the City.
Defending champions, the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), rebounded from last week’s defeat and overcame G.N.I.C by 56 at DCC on the back of impressive spells from West Indies youth players Ashmead Nedd and Qumar Torrington.
DCC, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were shot out for a scanty 114 inside 24 overs with Skipper, Laurence Smith (22) and Nedd (21) getting into the twenties.
Seamer, Jerimiah Benjamin (3-19) and leg-spinner, Claymont Dewsbury (3-18) combined for six wickets to dismiss the defending champions.
G.N.I.C, however, in response batted dismally as they were routed for 58 in 17 overs with Nedd grabbing 4 for 15 while Torrington snared 3-16 to deliver the win for the Queenstown club. Meanwhile, over at the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GY0), the University of Guyana (UG) in their opening match of the tournament, hammered the host by 164 runs.
The day began with GYO winning the toss and inserting the students, who posted a mammoth 370 for nine from their allotted 40 overs with the inform Ershad Ali hammering a beautiful century – 103 – and receiving support from Linden Austin, who also went great guns en route to his score of 70.
Left-arm spinner, Trevon France grabbed 4-49 for GYO who in response, were dismissed for 206 in 27 overs with the opening batsman, Chris Deonarine cracking a century – 111 – in a losing cause.
Almado Doman (4-45) and Omesh Danram (3-19) shared seven scalps between them to spearhead the win.
Transport Sports Club (TSC) on the other hand, overpowered Ace Warriors by a massive 254 runs to keep their perfect record intact. TSC batting first, posted 341 for seven from their allotted overs as Sunil Singh laced 13 fours and six maximums in a knock of 110 while Keon Morris (40), Devaughn Nandan (38) and national under 15 batsman, Shamar Yearwood (31) all chipped in handily.
Devendra Lall (3-32) and Clayon Halley (2-27) were in the wickets for Ace Warriors, who were bundled out for 87 in response as Azeem Azeez (4-22), Kevin Ross (2-16), Akeem Redman (2-19) and Franchot Duncan (2-24) completed a combined bowling effort to hand TSC the sizable win.
In the final match, Deonarine Seegobin led the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) to a 68-run win over Third Class.
GCC, batting first, were dismissed for 153 in 23 overs. Third Class in response, folded for 85 after Seegobin’s spell of 5 for 12.
