Cadogan, De Abreu shine

Caribbean silver girls under 15 silver medallist Abosaide Cadogan was the centre of attention on the opening night of the 2018 edition of the Farfan & Mendes Junior Skill level tournament after she notched up a hard-fought win over Lucas Jonas last evening at the Georgetown Club Squash Court.

Cadogan was made to work for her category B triumph, defeating her opponent 3-2.  She took the first set which was tied at 5 all, 11-7 but lost the second 9-11 after leading 6-0.

Cadogan quickly found her groove again by winning the third 11-6. Jonas, however, stuck to his straps and sent the match into the fifth set by taking the fourth set 14-12. Cadogan, though, used her experience and pulled out all the stops in the final game to clinch it 11-4 and her 3-2 win.

In another exciting encounter of the evening, Demetrius De Abreu downed the emerging Mohryan Baksh in an intense duel 3-1; 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Winners in category D, on the other hand, were Joshua Verwey who defeated Lujua Munroe 11-4, 11-9, 11-5 while Teija Edwards found a way past  Deau Fernandes 3-2.

Meanwhile, Category F encounters saw Safirah Sumner defeating Noah Rahaman in straight sets 11-5, 11-6 while Kaden Pynaendy had the better of Matthew Spooner 11-4, 11-8 to get his campaign rolling the right direction.

Christiana Fernandes joined him in the winner’s row by working her way past Malia Maikoo two sets to one, 11-6, 6-11, 11-3. Grant Fernandes was also a winner in that category, defeating Maikoo 11-8, 13-11

Romero Muniram highlighted the category G encounters with a come-from-behind win over Brenno DaSilva 10-12, 11-4, 11-4 to begin his campaign on a winning note. He also defeated Tristan Seereeram 11-2, 11-2 to register his second win of the night while Romero Muniram’s 11-3, 11-2 win over Tiana Gomes reflected an evening of which wins came relatively easy.

Aishani Persaud also pulled off a come-from-behind win after she overcame Arvin Seelall’s 11-8 first set win to take the next two sets 11-6, 12-10 to notch up her category E win.

Category E winners were Angel Rahaman who defeated Lucas Persaud 11-5, 11-8
