Corentyne woman who alleged assault by police says she has been threatened

A Corentyne woman, who last week accused ranks attached to the Number 51 Police Station of beating her and her son over an alleged theft, said on Monday that she received a threatening phone call from one of the ranks accused.

Thakurdi Jagnanand, 54, of Lot 73 Number 52 Village, Corentyne, had told this newspaper that two Tuesdays ago, police at the station had detained her and her son, after a hire car driver accused her son of stealing his phone from the back seat of the car.

Jagnanand last week visited the New Amsterdam Police Station and met with Deputy Commander, Wayne Dehearte, after which she filed a report against the ranks at the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).

The woman had alleged that the ranks dealt her lashes about her body and her sickly son a lash to the back of his neck. She had also accused a rank of stealing $103,000 from her purse during a search for the supposed missing phone.

On Monday, the woman said she received a phone call from an unknown number threatening to kill her if she returned to the OPR and followed up the matter.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that a police officer borrowed an Upper-Corentyne resident’s phone and made the threatening call.

Jagnanand had been told to return to the OPR’s office in New Amsterdam on Tuesday, a national holiday. However, after waiting for several hours, the woman decided to leave. “When me come home one police lady bring $1000 for the passage and say they mix up the date that let me go back today (Wednesday)”, she told Stabroek News last evening.

She further related that in the presence of three of the police officers, an OPR rank took her statement yesterday. “Them deh talk lie lie thing and he take my statement. He read it to me and he make someone else read it to me and make me sign two place. He give them papers and tell them to write them statement and bring it done back”.

However, the police officer who is accused of assaulting the woman and allegedly stealing her money was not present yesterday. “Them tell me how he gone for some police thing in Georgetown but when me come home I heard he was at Number 51 Court whole day”.

Stabroek News was also told that the officer was in the division yesterday.

Despite the threats, the woman is bent on following up the matter, so as to ensure justice is served.

Jagnanand last evening reiterated that as a hardworking citizen of Guyana, she did not deserve the treatment meted out to her.
