Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry implored student athletes to raise the bar while competing with a spirit of fair play following yesterday’s colourful parade of the 15 districts for this year’s National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships.
Her appeals were made during the feature address at the opening ceremony of the 58th edition of the championships currently underway at the National Track and Field Centre.
Henry who also declared the annual Championships open, noted that the fixture is the “pinnacle of (the) schools sporting calendar” and the perfect event for spotting and harnessing the sporting talent the 592 has on offer.
The Minister added that over the next five days, she expects to see personal bests recorded and records shattered.
Henry also recognized the longstanding support of benefactor, Banks DIH Limited, the company which has been sponsoring the event since its inception.
She also encouraged other corporate entities to follow in the footsteps of the local conglomerate.
Henry wished the event and the athletes success and then declared the Championships open.
During yesterday’s activities, remarks were also made by Regional Executive Officer of Region #3, Denis Jaikarran and Second Vice President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Julian Cambridge.
There were musical renditions by the West Demerara Secondary School Steel Orchestra and a physical display by the South Ruimveldt Secondary School.
The track and field events will continue on a daily basis from tomorrow for the remainder of the week at the Leonora venue with action starting at 09:00hrs.
