District 11’s Rekie Williams and Sheama Tyrell of District 10 emerged winners of the male and female Open 10k road race of this year’s 58th National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships which got underway yesterday.
Starting in the village of Mary and ending at the finish line inside the National Track and Field Centre, Williams and Tyrell were given rousing applauses as their entry came just after the opening ceremony.
Williams, 18, who hails from Region One but now attends Chase Academy in the city on a scholarship, stopped the clock in a brisk 34 minutes and 55 seconds to repeat as champion of the event.
His emphatic victory was 37 seconds faster than his winning time recorded last year.
He bested fellow podium dwellers, Darel Davis (District Six) and Morvin Hamilton of District Five. Davis ran in in 35 minutes and 54 seconds while Hamilton crossed the line 19 seconds later.
On the distaff side, Tyrell, silver medalist in last year’s race, amazingly crossed the tape in 42 minutes and seven seconds, some two minutes and 20 seconds faster than the time she recorded last year. Marcia Andrews (46m:29s) of District Nine and Lea Harris (48m:18s) of District One snared silver and bronze.
Action continues today with swimming and cycling from 09:00hrs at the Aquatic Centre and the National Park. Track and Field action resumes at Leonora tomorrow also from 09:00hrs. (Emmerson Campbell)
