A no-case submission was yesterday made by the attorney representing Trinidad and Tobago national Sawak Maraj, who was charged last year with faking his own kidnapping here and conspiring with others to secure a ransom.
Maraj is currently on trial before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore in Georgetown.
The first charge against him alleges that on October 27th, 2017, at Georgetown, he knowingly gave false information to the police that he had been kidnapped and that his abductor requested US$700,000.
It was further alleged that on the same date, at the Madewini Resort, he conspired with other persons to commit a felony by knowingly assisting in a negotiation to obtain the ransom.
Maraj’s attorney, Maxwell McKay, yesterday argued that the prosecution has failed to prove its case and that there was no evidence that the defendant faked his own kidnapping. Subsequent to the attorney’s submissions, police prosecutor Dominic Bess requested a date to submit his reply in writing.
This request was granted by the magistrate and the matter was adjourned until November 30th.
