New Amsterdam residents will benefit from a major upgrade in the management and disposal of solid waste for the Christmas holidays.
According to a Department of Public Information (DPI) press release, this pronouncement was one of several made on Monday, during the Council’s monthly statutory meeting.
The New Amsterdam Mayor & Town Council in highlighting its plans for the festive season, disclosed that several options have been streamlined for a faster and more efficient system of garbage disposal. It was also noted that strict measures will be established for persons who are found littering indiscriminately, DPI noted. Councillor Patricia Lynch stated that thus far, skip bins have been placed at strategic locations and can be easily accessed by residents. Citizens have already started the cleaning of their homes to be ready for the festive holidays and according to Councillor Lynch, this will generate an enormous amount of waste.
She further advised that the bins provided by the council should be used to dump only domestic waste and added that business owners can utilise the Municipality’s dumpsite.
“Business owners use the bins more than a normal resident, if the commercial places utilise the dumpsites then it will be easy for the garbage to be removed,” Lynch was quoted as saying.
Environmental Health Inspector,
Ackloo Ramsudh, told DPI that inspections will continue in supermarkets and grocery stores to seize all expired items. He emphasised that with these activities being undertaken, the chances of persons being sold expired goods will be greatly reduced. Ramsudh noted that several expired items have already been seized from supermarkets in the town.
According to the Town’s Engineer, Charles Johnson, workers have already commenced cleaning the main drains and canals in anticipation of rains. “We had to take the workers from what they were doing earlier, to clean the major drains because we don’t want any major flooding when it begins to rain,” Johnson was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Superintendent of the New Amsterdam Constabulary, Charles Roberts, pointed out that his department will be prepared to patrol the streets of New Amsterdam with a view to reducing criminal activities, owing to the increase in economic, social and cultural activities.
