A 15-year-old New Amsterdam student was on Monday detained after he allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old multiple times about his body.
The victim, who is said to be from the East Bank of Berbice, was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he has since been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Sources at the hospital yesterday said that the 18-year-old, who is reportedly in stable condition, sustained seven stab wounds about his body.
Meanwhile, Stabroek News was told that the younger teen has since been released to his relatives.
Chabinauth Singh, Officer in Charge of Crime in the division, confirmed the boy’s release yesterday, and told Stabroek News that counselling was offered to him. He noted that advice will be sought as to the way forward.
Eyewitnesses reported that the 15-year-old had just exited the school he attends in New Amsterdam, when the older boy approached him. The two then reportedly began to argue, allegedly over a younger, female student. A physical altercation then ensued and the 15-year-old allegedly used an unidentified weapon to stab the young man about his body. Some persons have claimed that a pair of scissors was used, while relatives of the accused claimed yesterday that an ice pick was the weapon utilized.
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter and have since taken statements from several persons, including friends of the injured young man, who were present during the incident.
