Fourteenth edition of indoor hockey tournament launched

The 14th Annual Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Festival was officially launched yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

The event which concludes on December 2nd, will feature several teams competing in three divisions.

Overseas teams from Trinidad and Tobago will also be present in the tournament inclusive of current men’s champion Queens Park and former Women’s winner Magnolias.

Winner of the Diamond Mineral Water Men’s and ExxonMobil Women’s Divisions respectively, will walk away with US$1,000, with the runner-up pocketing US$500. In the Stag Beer Over-35 section, the victor will receive US$500.

President of the Guyana Hockey Board [GHB] Phillip Fernandes, declared that the tournament is the longest running in the Caribbean region and attracts many high-profile teams and players.

According to Fernandes, he expects a very competitive and exciting tourney, while thanking the respective sponsors for their continued contribution in making the tournament a local and regional success.

Larry Wills, Diamond Mineral Water Brand Manager stated that his company is proud once again to the platinum sponsor of the event, adding that the event has evolved into arguably the premier event on the local hockey calendar.  

He further thanked the teams for their continued excitement and participation in the competition, while revealing that the entity is committed to the longevity of the event.

Meanwhile, Stag Beer Brand Coordinator Nigel Worrell said, “It’s an understatement to say we are delighted to be a part of the tournament, as we have been here for 12 years.”

Worrell further stated that the GHB must be commended for coordinating an excellent tournament which has grown from strength to strength with each edition.

Similarly, Nicholas Yearwood, Communications Manager of ExxonMobil, stated that the company was pleased with the response garnered in their previous association with the sport and as such, had no hesitation in committing once again.

He further disclosed that the entity is looking forward to be a staple in the tournament for future editions.
