A total of 14 persons were sworn in to the New Amsterdam Council yesterday and Winifred Haywood was re-elected Mayor with newcomer, Wainwright McIntosh, elected as Deputy Mayor.
Both Haywood and McIntosh were unopposed.
At the New Amsterdam Town Hall yesterday, Haywood and McIntosh along with Kirk Fraser, Patricia Lynch, Keith Myers, Ulva Stephens, Polly Ann Schultz, Esan Vanderstoop, Shianta Lambert and Busta Wright, were all sworn in as councillors on the A Partnership for National Unity slate.
The trio of Zabarally Armogan, Dr Grayson Halley and Nalinie Tahal were sworn in as PPP/C councillors. Additionally, Quacy Isaacs, the lone representative for the Alliance for Change on the council, was also sworn in yesterday.
Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, who was present at the proceedings, called on the council to discharge their duties with “efficiency and effectiveness”. She urged them to put their differences aside and always put the people of the town first.
Henry noted, that persons were elected because the citizens thought they could get the job done and she encouraged them to strive to live up to the expectations of the residents. Mayor Haywood noted that she was re-elected so as to be able to restore the town of New Amsterdam.
She said, she is honoured to once more be a part of the council which is made up of skilful persons.
She told her councillors, that they must always remain humble. “Go out to our people and serve our people”, she was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, PPP/C councillor, Dr Halley, also called for the council to work together and come up with innovative ideas so as to better develop the town of New Amsterdam.
He urged the senior councillors to give a fighting chance and a listening ear to new councillors who may come with new ideas.
He also spoke of the importance of having an experienced mayor, who he said can guide the council.
Meanwhile, Busta Wright was elected chairman of the council’s finance committee and Polly Ann Schultz was elected Vice Chairman. Both were unopposed.
Esan Vanderstoop, Kirk Fraser, Dr Grayson Halley, Patricia Lynch and Keith Myers were nominated to take up the three spots in the finance committee.
After a vote, Vanderstoop and Fraser who received 10 votes each along with Lynch who secured 8 votes, took up their seats as the remaining members of the finance committee. Halley and Myers received three votes each. Meanwhile, PPP/C Chattergoon Ramnauth was elected Mayor of Rose Hall Town yesterday, with Deonauth Harrinarine elected as Deputy Mayor.
Ramnauth was unopposed after Winston Hope who was nominated by an APNU councillor declined.
PPP/C Harrinarine secured eleven votes against APNU’s Shandra Chisholm who received five votes for the deputy mayor’s position.
Rose Hall has a total of 16 councillors with 11 from PPP/C and 5 from APNU.
