As the rainy season swiftly approaches, the Guyana Jaguars’ push for their fifth consecutive Cricket West Indies Regional Four-Day title was marred by persistent showers across the capital, extending to the National Stadium, Providence on Wednesday but Coach Rayon Griffith is still confident that his side can get their confidence up in time for the tournament.
A direct result of rain from Tuesday night saw the pitch unable to be properly prepared while consistent showers dampened the spirits of the athletes but not the construction workers who were seen repairing and repainting the stands at the international venue.
Nevertheless, when the match got underway at 14:30 hrs, only seven overs were possible before the umpires were forced to call on the groundsmen to cover the pitch, ultimately closing the day’s play but the team still squeezed in training sessions.
According to Griffith, “Today wasn’t the perfect day, we didn’t get a full day of cricket but we did get some work in today. This morning we did some physical and we focused more on the fielding.”
The coach explained that they “got a couple overs in the day but not as much as we wanted but hopefully tomorrow we watch and see how it goes and we will continue with other stuff also.”
He stated that “with the tournament beginning next week we want them to get that feeling especially playing so we are hoping to get them playing tomorrow and get their eye in and most importantly their confidence.”
