Weeks after a visiting United States-based Guyanese family was robbed during a restaurant stop in Alberttown, Georgetown, police are still to arrest a suspect.
Commander of ‘A’ Division Marlon Chapman yesterday told Stabroek News that an arrest has yet to be made.
Meanwhile, Nafeeza Sakur, a member of the family, has expressed disappointment at the manner in which case has been handled. She noted that since the theft, police have not contacted the family about the progress made in the investigation. “We are very disappointed in the manner police investigated the matter from the inception. They were very lackadaisical in their approach to the matter. Apart from the restaurant having surveillance footage other buildings had but they didn’t go to those buildings and ask to look at the footage,” she said.
She noted that the family has since returned to the United States and has given up hope of justice.
On the day of the robbery, bandits reportedly broke into a minibus that was parked in front of the Kamboat Chinese Restaurant on Albert Street. The bags containing the valuables were stored in the bus under a sweater in the bus behind the driver’s seat.
At the time of the robbery, the family had stopped for food after landing at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri. With the minibus being left unattended, the bandit/s managed to gain access and stole millions in jewellery and gadgets.
While important documents were also removed from the bus, these were recovered nearby.
One resident had recalled seeing two individuals on a motorcycle riding around the restaurant acting suspiciously.
The surveillance footage from the restaurant showed the perpetrator committing the crime but it was impossible to identify him.
