A known fraud accused was yesterday sentenced to 36 months in jail after being found guilty of defrauding an auto sales company of vehicles worth a total of $26.3 million.
Clayton Alleyne, 57, who was said to be the head of a loan company, was charged last year with obtaining from Jeetendra Ram, of Fantasy Auto Sales, six cars, valued $26,300,000, by virtue of a forged Republic Bank of Guyana cheque in favour of Fantasy Auto Sales.
At the conclusion of his trial yesterday in Georgetown, Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore found Alleyne guilty of the offence.
When asked if he would like to say anything before being sentenced, Alleyne told the court that he was a well-educated 58-year-old man with seven children and pleaded for leniency. The magistrate took his age into consideration and sentenced him to 36 months in jail.
Police had stated that Alleyne entered into a sales agreement with the car dealership to purchase the six vehicles and paid with a manager’s cheque. It was during the company’s attempt to cash the cheque that it was discovered that the cheque was forged.
Alleyne has faced other fraud charges.
