Four of Guyana’s most promising youth cricketers have been shortlisted to participate in a West Indies under–19 training camp in Antigua from December 10 – 20, 2018 following their strong showing in this year’s regional under–19 tournament.
The quartet comprises Ashmead Nedd, Kelvin Umroa, Sachin Singh and Kevlon Anderson who are scheduled to depart Guyana in just under a week to join their other Caribbean counterparts.
The camp, according to a source, is one of the many initiatives organised by Cricket West Indies (CWI) as part of its preparations for the 2020 International Cricket Council (ICC) under – 19 World Cup which is scheduled to be played in South Africa.
Head Coach, Graeme West and his assistant Roderick Eswick will be spearheading the camp.
Nedd, who participated in this year’s ICC under–19 World Cup in New Zealand, is a seasoned campaigner whose left-arm spin, bagged 20 wickets in this year’s regional under–19 tournament.
He is the lone Guyanese among the quartet with previous WI under–19 experience and is highly tipped to lead the Caribbean side at the 13th edition of the tournament.
Umroa, another consistent left-arm spinner, snared 21 wickets this year to earn his maiden West Indies call-up.
The Albion Cricket Club spinner is one of his club’s exciting emerging prospects who would be hoping to make the 2020 World Cup in a bid to carry on his Club’s rich history of producing quality spinners.
Anderson represents the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYC) in local competitions.
He has earned his tag of being one of Guyana’s most gifted youth middle order batsmen and who could even feature in this year’s regional four-day championship, having scored the runs locally to justify a call-up which would undoubtedly boost his resume and his prospects of going to South Africa.
The 18-year-old was among the runs for Guyana during this year’s regional under–19 tournament.
Singh, the youngest member in the bunch, has previously played for the West Indies at the under–16 level, which he led to England last year.
He is a compact left-handed opening batsman, who quietly goes about his business. He scored 201 runs for Guyana in 2018. Singh along with Nedd are products of the Demerara Cricket Club’s (DCC) thriving youth programme.
