Dear Editor,
Rovman Powell is the Windies one-day captain because he is a sort of an all rounder who has shown some promise with the bat but has done very poorly in the last series played recently in India. Since he will not be an automatic selection to the eleven he is the ideal captain. The captaincy will enhance his technique, which is sorely lacking particularly against spin. In addition he is young and sounds diffident. We should remember, however, that he is Jamaican, a group that has not had leadership positions in recent times. Windies Cricket being a secret society for which winning is not important, is not required to give West Indian cricket fans any reason for its choice of captain. They should be glad to be told who is going to be captain before the team takes the field. Since the head coach is an unknown quantity it is wise to have a junior member of the squad as captain.
Yours faithfully,
Romain Pitt.
