The reigning Caribbean under–21 table tennis champion, Shemar Britton has expressed his bliss after he served his way to another senior table tennis title in Trinidad and Tobago.
The Guyanese, who continues to thrive in the Twin Island Republic, clinched the Trinidad and Tobago Super Singles Men’s Open title on Wednesday last at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Main Road, Tacarigua, Trinidad and Tobago.
“I’m delighted to win my second major tournament in Trinidad, the players here are among some of the best the region has to offer so it’s always a great test to put my skill against theirs,” Britton revealed to Stabroek Sport, yesterday.
Britton, who currently attends the University of the West Indies (UWI) pursuing a Law Degree, competed under the Queen’s Park Table Tennis Club banner and played unbeaten in the round robin final to take the title.
The Caribbean Champion defeated Arun Roopnarine in straight sets (3-0), before dropping a set in his 3-1 win over Arron Edwards (3-1).
Britton continued his winning ways by downing Luc O Young 3-1 and Dayanand Maharaj in straight sets 3-0. His biggest individual triumph though came against current Trinidad and Tobago national champion, Cutis Humphrey whom he defeated 3-2 in an intense five-set duel.
Britton, who will be doing battle for Guyana in the 2019 Senior Caribbean Table Tennis championships scheduled for March 9 – 17 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), will be sacrificing his holiday season to intensify his preparation for these critical championships with a training camp in China.
“Yeah, the China engagement is one that definitely gets my blood pumping. I’ve been hearing real positive feedback from my teammates (who) are on a training stint over there currently, so excited to go catch a piece of the action myself especially since my previous engagement in China was such a fruitful one in terms of development,” he revealed.
The 2019 Caribbean Championships will be the qualification event for the Caribbean to select one male and one female to represent the Caribbean at the 2019 Pan American games scheduled for August 2019 in Lima, Peru
