A seaman was yesterday remanded to prison following an appearance at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court on a charge of trafficking cannabis.
It is alleged that Wasim Moseley, 39, a seaman of Lot 87 CC Eccles, was found in possession of 749 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The court heard that the seaman was arrested on December 10 at Vriesland, West Coast Demerara, following the discovery of the drugs which were wrapped in transparent plastic, in a bag that was around his neck.
Moseley, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool.
The prosecution, in its objection to bail being granted, said that no special reasons were presented to the court that would warrant such. It was also noted that the accused had in a written statement to the police, admitted that the drugs were his.
However, Moseley, who was unrepresented at court, told the magistrate that the cannabis was not his. He further explained that on the day of the incident, he was walking out of a yard when he was accosted by four policemen bearing guns, which caused him to run away.
Additionally, he claimed that after he was apprehended, the officers told him that any other drugs found would be pinned on him.
The prosecution in response, explained that Moseley had tried to escape from police but was apprehended after getting stuck in the mud along a section of the Demerara River.
Having heard both accused and prosecution, Magistrate Liverpool ordered that Moseley be remanded to prison until February 7, 2019, when the case will be called again at the Wales Magistrate’s Court.
