Police on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) have impounded a vehicle that is suspected to have been used in a hit and run accident, which claimed the life of an Annandale teenager.
Traffic Chief Linden Isles last night confirmed that police ranks were able to impound the minibus, which was found covered in a yard.
Isles explained that based on intelligence gathered, the ranks searched a yard at Mon Repos, ECD, and found two minibuses, including one they believe was involved in the accident.
As a result, he said, a woman who owns one of the minibuses was questioned by ranks.
Based on checks made by the investigating ranks, it was revealed that the bus believed to have been involved in the accident was being driven by a resident of Vigilance village.
Meanwhile, a relative of Reaz Shaw, who was injured in the accident and remains in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital, said police have informed them of the development in the case.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday, claimed the life of 15-year-old Karamchand Khemraj, called ‘Ajay,’ who is said to have been a horse cart operator of Lot 44 Annandale West, ECD.
At the time of the accident, Khemraj was towing Shaw and they were on their way home after visiting a shop in the community.
Khemraj and Shaw, a trainee mechanic of Lot 35 Annandale West, ECD, were both picked up unconscious and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Police on Monday said Khemraj succumbed while receiving medical attention around 3 am.
The teenagers, the police said, rode out of a northern access road onto the public road when the white Toyota ‘Pitbull’ minibus, which was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the said road, collided with the bicycle.
As a result, both teens fell to the roadway and sustained head injuries.
The accident was recorded by nearby surveillance cameras, which showed that the teens were struck from behind.
