The police were up to yesterday afternoon continuing their search for the driver who is suspected to have been responsible for Sunday’s Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD) hit-and-run accident, which claimed the life of a teenager and left another youth critically injured.
A minibus, which is suspected to be the vehicle used in the accident, was impounded on Thursday after it was found covered in a yard at Mon Repos, ECD.
Contacted for an update yesterday, Traffic Chief Linden Isles told Stabroek News that ranks are making every effort to locate the driver.
It remains unclear whether the driver, a Vigilance resident, and the occupants of the property where the bus was found are related.
However, Isles said a female who lives at the Mon Repos property was questioned and linked the driver to the crime.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday evening, claimed the life of 15-year-old Karamchand Khemraj, called ‘Ajay,’ who is said to have been a horse cart operator of Lot 44 Annandale West, ECD.
His friend, Reaz Shaw, a trainee mechanic of Lot 35 Annandale West, ECD remained critical up to yesterday afternoon.
He is warded in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Khemraj succumbed while receiving medical attention at the facility.
The teenagers, the police said, rode out of a northern access road onto the public road when the white Toyota ‘Pitbull’ minibus, which was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the said road, collided with the bicycle.
As a result, both teens fell to the roadway and sustained head injuries.
The accident was recorded by nearby surveillance cameras, which showed that the teens were struck from behind.
Relatives of both of the teens yesterday told Stabroek News that their hopes of receiving justice have been stoked by the discovery of the minibus believed to have been involved in the accident.
