A Kingston, Corriverton taxi driver surrendered to police yesterday after customs officials discovered four boxes of smuggled chicken inside of a car he was assigned to drive.
The car, which belongs to former Mayor of Corriverton Krishnand Jaichand, was impounded yesterday after the discovery.
According to information gathered, Jaichand owns a taxi service and the car is part of his fleet.
However, Stabroek News was told that the driver of the car, who is from Kingston, Corriverton, abandoned the car after noticing customs ranks yesterday morning.
This publication was reliably informed that the driver started working at the taxi service some three weeks ago. He told the base dispatcher that he was on a personal pickup when the car was discovered at Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne.
“Like he been now start to full the vehicle and when he see customs he get away and customs then seize the vehicle,” a source told this newspaper.
The driver subsequently turned himself over to authorities and he was released on $20,000 bail after being questioned.
A source told this publication that an investigation is ongoing after which the driver is expected to be fined.
