Dear Editor,
The letter from Christian leader Ms Phyllis J. Jordan in SN of 11 December, 2018 is welcome. Ms Jordan and some other Christian leaders of Guyana have already affirmed their abhorrence of homosexuality and transgenderism and have expressed faith that homosexuals can become heterosexuals. They have objected to any equality in law for LGBT Guyanese. There is no intention to provide any logical challenge to the resoluteness of their faith and belief.
The point was made that “Homosexuality, lesbianism and habitual lying are life-style choices that we make.” Even if sections of the Christian community believe that homosexuality and lesbianism are choices like habitual lying, or adultery or fornication , then does that community wish for liars and adulterers and fornicators to be punished by law and related discriminatory practices the same way as homosexuals are punished ?
The Office of the Prime Minister is supposed to deal with governance, and that office is perhaps the best one, with the Attorney General to explain what happens when laws are deemed unconstitutional. Is this ruling a first of its kind for Guyana – where laws have been deemed unconstitutional so the National Assembly must react?
Ms Jordan has affirmed the belief of her Christian community that homosexual practices will cause an end to human civilization through the cessation of procreation. Fortunately, the existence of homosexuality and celibacy, refusing to have children, and other non-procreative sexual practices from since the beginning of humanity has not caused any implosion. The world though, Guyana included, is slowly recognizing, that the human behaviours of reckless consumption of natural resources, and pollution and lack of concern for the planet Earth are probably more likely to cause the apocalypse than two men or two women living together and raising a family
