Dear Editor,
Is there any industry in Guyana that is profitable? If there were then investors would be flocking to that industry creating jobs. So, for the Government to single out the sugar industry saying that it is not profitable so they had to “downsize” the industry is an interesting concept.
Since coming to power the APNU+AFC Government of President David Granger has sacked around 7,000 persons. Many of these people are poor people. Then they have the audacity of giving the wages saved from these sacked workers to other workers as salary increases. Guyana is not like the USA and UK where you can flit easier from job to job. There is no spare capacity to absorb the sacked workers. What this has done it to push up the unemployment rate by over 3%.
Aside from the already sold-out oil industry (which has not created thousands of jobs for Guyanese) no other industry is deemed viable in Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Sean Ori
