Dear Editor,
I wish to compliment the president and executive of the Guyana Boxing Association for hosting the Caribbean Championships. I was thrilled at the level of competition especially on the final night. If I were to be a judge then my pick for Best Boxer would have been middleweight Desmond Amsterdam. Amsterdam fought three times and won all with one stoppage. I also enjoyed watching young Keevin Allicock and Jamaal Eastman, they represented Guyana well. However, the tournament was not without its flaws. Former national welterweight champion turned announcer Michael Benjamin stole the show and seemed on a mission to mix up everything. Benjamin did a sour job as the ring announcer and forced many “suck teeths” when he continuously announced wrong rounds, wrong names, wrong winners, wrong corners and even wrong countries. In times gone by Benjamin would have assaulted his opponents in the ring. During the Caribbean Championship Benjamin used the microphone to assault the ears of spectators. It may be time to hang up the mic Mike.
Yours faithfully,
R. Trim
