Police Sergeant Rodwell Sarabo, who spearheaded a team that dismantled a major carjacking operation earlier this year, was yesterday named 2018’s overall ‘Best Cop’ by the Guyana Police Force at its annual awards ceremony.
The New Amsterdam-born rank, who was also awarded the title of ‘Best Detective’ in 2015, was honoured for his years of service during which he solved a number of high profile crimes such as murders, firearm offences, robbery under arms, frauds and gang-related crimes.
He received a trophy and $250,000 cash during the ceremony which was held at the Tactical Services Unit Square, Eve Leary.
Sergeant George Conway, who was named ‘A’ Division’s ‘Best Cop’ a few days ago, was the runner-up. He also received a trophy and $200,000 cash.
Sarrabo, during a brief address, called on youths to remain in school and to stay away from criminal activities.
“I would like to urge our youths to remain in school, get educated. The benefits of education is far greater than being involved in crime,” Sarabo said.
He also advised his colleagues to do their best in everything they do. “I must say what a prestigious award this is. One that all ranks should someday achieve. I believe that all of us were born with a purpose. All of us have something that we were supposed to do and all of us have some goodness and within that goodness, gives us the responsibility to manifest greatness,” he said.
He assured the public that there are ranks who are still committed and will continue to serve. “I would like to reassure you, that the dedicated ranks of the Guyana Police Force are still committed and will remain committed in serving you,” Sarrabo said.
Incentives were also given to ranks of various sections of the Force including the Community Policing Groups and Sports personalities, who were lauded for their performance throughout the year.
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Leslie James told the gathering that to date, the Force had recorded an 11.7% decrease in serious crime despite a number of challenges this year.
This, he said, was overcome with collective efforts.
“These awards, in a general way, seek to build morale, of course motivation,” James said.
He noted that a sum of $18,616,000 was given to 2,357 ranks of the Force for their performance this year.
