The People’s Republic of China has donated $6.2 million in medical supplies and equipment to the Linden Hospital Complex (LHC).
According to a Department of Public Information (DPI) press release, the donation was handed over on Wednesday, by the head of the Chinese Medical Brigade in Linden, Dr Wang Feng along with the other doctors of the team.
The DPI also stated that the items included ultrasonic atomization, atomizer energy chips, syringe pumps, oxygen pumps, and infant oxygen hoods and will be disbursed to the Kwakwani Hospital as well as the Upper Demerara Hospital as the need arises.
The LHC Public Relations Officer, Toshanna Allicock, said that the staff of the medical facility is extremely grateful for the donation which is an annual exercise that has been conducted for the past 19 years. She disclosed that $5 million in items was donated last year and that it contributed significantly to the improvement of the services, especially emergency services, offered at the hospital.
Some critical items that were donated last year include anaesthesia machines, portable ultrasound machines and electrocardiogram (EKG) machines, and the Medical Brigade has already asked the LHC management to compile a list of items needed for 2019, the DPI release added.
The PRO said the hospital can now offer these services on a 24-hour basis since more doctors and nurses have been trained in managing them. “Since then we have been training doctors and nurses to use this equipment so that we can improve the speed at which we offer EKG testing and ultrasound as well … so instead of waiting for someone to come and have these EKG testing done, we have the nurses right there who are able to handle that, so we can get faster results,” she was quoted as saying.
