A solid all-round performance from Guyana Jaguars’ Clinton Pestano spurred Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets to a 51-run victory over a resilient Young Warriors Cricket Club to lift the Berbice Cricket Board/Busta 40-overs title at Cumberland yesterday.
On a track where the ball wasn’t coming on, Rose Hall Town’s captain Shawn Pereira won the toss and took first strike, managing 133 all out in 34.3 overs.
They then returned to skittle Young Warriors on their home turf for 82 in 14.1 overs.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport after the match, Pereira, who has led his side to their fifth title of the year, said after being bowled out for the low total, they had to put in 110 percent and was spearheaded by Pestano who bowled excellently.
The successful captain said that the turning point of the match from his perspective was after the opening stand of 55 from six overs with two spinners opening the bowling, but when Pestano was introduced, the match went in their favour.
The former national youth captain commended Young Warriors for a hard-fought game, crediting them for their good play and encouraged the young side to continue to improve, having reached two finals for the season.
Young Warriors got off to a good start with the ball, following up a maiden first over with the wicket of Junior Sinclair who was trapped leg before wicket by Trevon Stanislaus. His elder brother, Jason Sinclair was bowled by Devendra Ramoutar, both without scoring to leave the visitors 5-2.
Pestano joined junior Cricketer-of-the-Year, Kevin Sinclair and the pair added 46 for the third wicket. Kevin Sinclair was caught by the wicket-keeper attempting a flick only to get an edge that went up in the air off of Suresh Dhani for a top score of 37 consisting of two fours and a lone six.
Pestano then partnered with National under-19, cricketer Kevlon Anderson to provide another solid partnership, this time worth 26.
Linden Austin then trapped the senior national player leg before wicket for 30, with four boundaries.
Anderson (19), Vidal Crandon (22) and Eon Hooper (10) were the only other batsmen to get starts as a series of run outs ended the innings prematurely. Ishwar Singh bagged 3-7 in 2.3 overs while Stanislaus supported with 2-22 from seven overs.
In reply, Alex Algoo took a liking to Hooper’s bowling, carting off 21 runs in the first over on his way to a top score of 42 consisting of four sixes and two fours before Pestano removed him and breaking the half century opening stand.
Pestano also trapped fellow opener, Singh for 23 (four boundaries) to trigger a collapse.
The Guyana Jaguars all-rounder ended with 7-28 from seven overs, two of which were maidens as no other batsmen reached double figures.
Keith Simpson supported with 2-21 from 5.1 overs at the venue that last hosted a match under former President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Anil Beharry.
