At 1:20 am today, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded to a report of a fire at Diamond Secondary School on the East Bank of Demerara.
A release from the Ministry of Education (MoE) said that upon arrival, the administrative building, which housed the Head teacher and Deputy Head teacher and Teachers’ offices along with the Computer Laboratory and the Library was completely engulfed.
The release said that the GFS responded promptly and was able to contain the blaze to that building which was completely destroyed. The release said that the cause of the fire is not known at this time. Checks were made by the GFS to ascertain whether there was a power surge affecting that area at the time of the blaze and it was found that there was no issue with the power supply.
No other building was affected or damaged by the fire and therefore school will reopen as scheduled, the release said. The MoE said it is currently engaging the school’s administration and other regional officials to ensure plans are in place for the smooth operations of the school when it reopens.
The MoE said that when the GFS completes its investigations, the findings will be made known. (Ministry of Education photos)
