Two women died following an accident at Marudi Public Road Soesdyke / Linden Highway yesterday afternoon.
Dead are 54-year-old Melva Lucus and 51-year-old Elsa Fernandes both of Grand Sand Road Soesdyke.
According to a press statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) at about 16:45 yesterday motor car PRR 3606 driven by a 28-year-old resident of Kuru Kururu Village was proceeding North along the western side of Marudi Public Road at a fast rate of speed when the driver alleged that he swerved west to avoid hitting a motor car which was proceeding south along the western lane, overtaking another vehicle.
“As a result of swerving, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a wooden bus shed on the western parapet of the said road and further collided with the two female pedestrians who were standing on the western parapet,” the statement explains adding that the pedestrians were picked up in an unconscious condition by the police who took them to the Diamond Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies are presently at Lyken’s Funeral Parlour awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination while the driver who passed a breathalyzer test, is in custody assisting with the investigation.
