A farmer was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with fatally stabbing a man who had intervened in a dispute.
It is alleged that Timothy Martin, 46, on December 27, 2018, at Kurukabaru Village, North Pakaraimas, murdered Deebert Ovid Joseph.
Martin, a farmer, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to prison.
According to the police facts, on the day in question, the defendant was given “kari wine” to drink when he began to behave in an abusive manner, allegedly threatening to beat up two men. Joseph allegedly approached the defendant and enquired what the problem was. Martin reportedly became annoyed, pulled out a knife from his waist and stabbed Joseph about his body. The injured man was taken to the hospital where he succumbed while receiving treatment.
Martin is expected to make his next court appearance on January 15 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
