Dear Editor,
I checked in at the Ogle Airport for my LIAT flight number 398 from Guyana to Trinidad on 3rd January 2019.
After checking in, I waited at the customs conveyor belt for my suitcase to be scanned. The conveyor belt stopped after my suitcase disappeared from view.
The attendant said that they were awaiting the arrival of the CANU inspector. I enquired whether they wanted me to open the suitcase (which was not locked).
The answer was no. Eventually, the attendant returned to say all was well.
On my arrival in Trinidad I realized that there was a small hole on one side of my new suitcase. On opening it, I also discovered a small hole in my leather utility bag and a puncture in a tube of shaving cream, which caused it to leak out creating a mess of everything.
The alignment of the holes could only have been made under the X-Ray, so I am convinced that the Customs Officers were fully responsible for damaging my property. They could have simply asked me to open the suitcase as is done at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
This crude practice must not be allowed to continue and I am calling on the relevant authorities to investigate those responsible for damaging my property.
Yours faithfully,
K. Pollard
