The democratic process of electing officials to continue the command of cricket administration in the city will take the spotlight on January 29 when the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) holds its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and election of office bearers.
The process will be held at the Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) building and will commence at 18:30hrs.
The current administration is headed by former West Indies all-rounder, Roger Harper, who from all accounts, did an excellent job of managing the affairs of cricket in Georgetown over the last two years. Harper, in that regard, disclosed to Stabroek Sport that he has all intentions to seek re-election to office in an effort to fortify sold work done.
This will be his fifth consecutive term, if elected.
“Yes! Definitely, I’ll be seeking election again and it will be my final term,” Harper said, explaining that he cannot run for a sixth consecutive term because of constitutional provisions within the GCA.
In running for a fifth term, Harper referred to significant strides the association made under his tenure, particularly during 2018 when eight finals were played, canvassing every age group level in the city.
“2018 was really a tremendous year for us and it’s the first year in my recollection that we were able to run competitions in every single age group category… [from under – 13 to the senior first and second division level].” While he underscored the “fantastic” strides in a year, Harper – who is a well-respected administrator – highlighted a few deterrents which the GCA weathered.
“While we had weather interruptions in between, we had enough good weather to complete most of our tournaments… we had eight finals played in 2018 and thought that was tremendous.
“We still encounter some challenges with grounds, which disrupted the smooth running of our competitions, but I think our competitions committee did a fantastic job to enable us to manoeuvre and still complete these tournaments.”
The rest of the executive, which consolidated the solid work of the association over the last two years, comprises Deborah McNichol, Secretary; Paul Castello, Assistant Secretary; Denis Wilson, Treasurer; Imran Alli, Assistant Treasurer; Graham Alli, Marketing Manager; Colin Alfred, Public Relations Officer, and Shawn Massiah, Chairman of the Competitions Committee.
