A traffic officer attached to the Providence Police Station was yesterday afternoon struck down by a motor car while directing traffic at Eccles, on the East Bank Public Road.
The accident reportedly occurred at around 4.55pm.
At the time, the officer was directing traffic at the junction of the Eccles entrance and the main public road during the afternoon peak hour.
The injured cop has been identified as Constable 24396 Kevin Aaron. He was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was taken for medical attention and later sent away.
A video recording posted on social media platform Facebook moments after the accident occurred, showed the policeman lying in the centre of the road.
However, the video also showed that the driver of the white motor car, a female, stopped after hitting the cop and went to check on him.
Police told this newspaper that Aaron was standing in the centre of the road which separates the eastern and western carriageways and was facing east. He was directing traffic exiting from Eccles access road and proceeding west.
It was at this point that he was struck down by motor car PPP 5503, which was proceeding west out of the Eccles access road.
As a result of the collision, Constable Aaron fell onto the road and sustained injuries about his body.
A second policeman, who was also on duty at the location alerted other officers. The responding police team arrived with a patrol vehicle and rushed their colleague to the hospital.
A breathalyzer test was administered to the driver following the accident and the results were shown to be negative.
The matter is currently being investigated.
