For the eighth time in the past five months, bandits once again broke into the Lusignan Golf Club, on the East Coast of Demerara, where they held the security guard at gunpoint before making off with a quantity of beverages and other items.
Club supervisor Philip Haynes yesterday told Stabroek News that the break-in occurred sometime between 2 am and 3 am yesterday.
The crime was allegedly committed by three unmasked men, one of whom was armed with a handgun.
Two persons have since been detained by the police for questioning.
Haynes explained to this newspaper that the security guard on duty reported that he was alerted after hearing a “hitting” sound on the concrete walls. The guard was confronted after the men broke through a wall.
The men, Haynes said, gained entry into the bar and the garage by breaking the walls.
It was from these areas that they carted off a quantity of beverages as well as gasoline, jerseys, cutlasses and other items.
An alarm was raised and the police was summoned after their escape.
Haynes said the club building has surveillance cameras but they are currently not working.
He added that efforts are being made to have a security alarm system set up within the next two weeks.
Haynes expressed frustration about the constant attacks and voiced his belief that they are being undertaken to sabotage to the current management of the club.
One of the recent attacks at the club occurred early last month, when the club was robbed of a total of $1 million in valuables following a break-in.
In November, another $1 million in valuables had been reportedly stolen.
No one has been charged over the previous attacks.
