Many of you may have received potted plants as gifts for Christmas, or you may have purchased your own to add to your décor. As is normal during the holiday season, sellers had a wide assortment of both local and foreign, eye-catching plants on display.
Now that you have them, you might be pondering what to do and how to care for these plants. If you know the names you can look them up online using Google. It is likely that most of them would need repotting. Plants are usually sold in small pots which they quickly outgrow.
Choose a pot two sizes larger than you think you need, so as to give the plant enough room to grow. Make sure that the pot has good drainage and use a well-blended potting soil for transplanting.
Remember that different varieties of plants require different types of soil. Here is a brief guide:
Foliage and flowering plants – potting soil
Anthurium lilies – Anthurium mix
Orchids – Orchid mix
Cactus – Cactus soil
Ferns – Fibre dust
Please do your research and after repotting, try to keep your repotted plant in a semi-shaded area for a few days.
For those of you who bought or were gifted Poinsettias, please note that they would need to be repotted by the end of the month. You will notice the red leaves start to fall and tiny green leaves popping out, though some of the red might remain until the end of February. Once you repot your Poinsettia, you can leave it outside to grow. Place it under semi-shade for a few days then in the open. Once treated carefully, it grows well as a regular plant.
Until next week, Happy Gardening!
