Assistant Commissioner of Police David Ramnarine, who proceeded on vacation after being passed over for the post of Police Commissioner, has been granted an extension of his leave.
Commissioner of Police Leslie James on Friday confirmed that Ramnarine requested an extension of his leave, which was granted by the Ministry of Public Security.
“What I can say about Mr Ramnarine? He is still on annualized vacation leave………Yeah, he did request and it was granted not by me but through the Ministry of Public Security,” James said.
However, when asked when Ramnarine is scheduled to return, James could not provide a definite date, only noting that it would be sometime this year. “He is expected to resume this year. I don’t recall the specific date or the exact date but this year he is expected to return,” he said.
Ramnarine was serving as acting Police Commissioner prior to President David Granger’s appointment of James on August 30th last year.
Days after James assumed office, Ramnarine proceeded on leave.
Prior to James’ appointment, Ramnarine, who had served as acting Police Commissioner since the retirement of former Commissioner Seelall Persaud last year, was the most senior rank in the force.
In addition to James’ appointment as Commissioner, four Deputy Commis-sioners, namely, Lyndon Alves, Maxine Graham, Nigel Hoppie and Paul Williams, were also appointed with immediate effect. They are responsible for four areas of the police force: Operations, Adminis-tration, Law Enforcement and Special Branch/ Intelligence.
In addition to James and his four deputies, Ramnarine and Assistant Commissioners David Clifton Hicken and Marlon Chapman were also interviewed for the post of Commissioner.
