A Cuban tattoo artist who exceeded his one-month stay permit, was on Friday fined, after pleading guilty to the offence in a city court.
Having been permitted to stay in Guyana for a month after his arrival on November 14, 2018, it was alleged that Hunyarys Lazaro Delgada Reygaga, 39, exceeded his one-month stay, from December 14, 2018, to January 17, 2019, in Georgetown Guyana. The charge was read to him by Magistrate Leron Daly.
According to Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, on January 17, the date Reygaga was arrested, he was at the United States Embassy behaving in a disorderly manner.
Police were called in and the defendant was arrested. Reygaga was then taken to the CID headquarters, where he was asked to produce his documents. Upon inspection of the documents, the police noticed that Reygaga had overstayed his one-month stay permit and the man was subsequently arrested.
In Reygaga’s version of events, as relayed by his lawyer Bernard DaSilva, on January 17, Reygaga, accompanied by his mother, went to the United States Embassy to enquire about his application for residency.
After leaving the embassy, while they were walking, an officer approached them and took them to the police station. DaSilva also said that Reygaga had applied for an extension of his permit, but hasn’t received word so far.
Reygaga was fined $30,000 and is to be deported to Cuba on or before February 1. If, however, Reygaga fails to pay the fine, he faces six months imprisonment.
