A Lusignan, East Coast Demerara mechanic died in a suspected hit-and-run incident on the Linden/Soesdyke highway on Saturday and his family is calling on the police to conduct a thorough investigation.
The dead man has been identified as 21-year old Brian Basdeo of Grass Field, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
Stabroek News understands that at the time of the incident, Basdeo was returning home with his friends who had journeyed with him to the highway to pick up a car. The car was to be taken to his workshop.
While they were on their way, the car developed further mechanical problems resulting in them stopping to rectify it. They later received help from persons passing in another car.
In the process of fixing the car, it was reported that they noticed another vehicle approaching at a fast rate. Basdeo, who was checking the car, was hit, while a friend who was with him, was also struck by the oncoming car when he attempted to move from its path.
Basdeo was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre while the friend was treated and sent away.
Basdeo’s sister, Sherry, yesterday told Stabroek News that at around 6.30 pm on Saturday, the family was informed of the incident. However, the caller did not say what had transpired and the family was only informed of Basdeo’s death in a subsequent phone call.
She explained that the family is seeking answers on her brother’s death as what is being related to them is not adding up and they suspect his death is by foul play.
“We still have many questions that are unanswered. The friend is telling us different stories, his wife is telling us a different story. We want the police to investigate because we need justice,” she stressed.
According to the sister, her brother was left at the scene and when they questioned the friend on his whereabouts, he told family members that Basdeo was coming in a car.
“My brother was left on the scene. When his girlfriend and a cousin went, they found him covered with a sheet. Today, when we asked why he was left behind, they couldn’t give us an answer. My brother was not a fat person, they could have put him in the same car with his friend who was injured,” she lamented.
She added that none of the persons who claimed to be present at the time of the incident could give any details on the vehicle that struck her brother. “We are seeking justice for my brother, we weren’t present at the time of the accident and we think it might be foul play because we cannot get answers,” the grieving sister said.
