GECOM mandates CEO to report on poll readiness

With a 90-day constitutional  clock ticking, the Guyana Elections Com-mission (GECOM) has mandated Chief Election Officer (CEO) Keith Lowenfield to prepare a report of possible scenarios with timelines for the holding of general and regional elections for discussion tomorrow when the commission meets again.

Second annual Mash Futsal competition launched

With the opening night confirmed for February 2nd at the National Gymnasium, the 2nd edition of the Magnum Mash Futsal Championship was officially launched yesterday at the Windjammer Hotel, Kitty.  Speaking at the launch, Esan Griffith of tournament coordinator Sanns Sports stated that he expects discipline to be showcased by the competing teams, as the event is being used as a vehicle to advance social cohesion.

NBA roundup: Warriors’ Thompson ties 3-point record

Klay Thompson scored 23 of his 44 points in the third quarter Monday, tying an NBA record by connecting on his first 10 3-point attempts of the game, and the visiting Golden State Warriors extended their winning streak to eight games with a 130-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

New CCJ Justice sworn in

Andrew Burgess of Barbados, is the newest judge to be appointed to the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).  According to a CCJ press release, Justice Burgess was sworn in by Dame Sandra Mason, Governor-General of Barbados in a ceremony at Government House in Barbados on Friday.

First Test

When the West Indies take the field this morning at the start of the First Test versus Joe Root’s England team fans throughout the Caribbean will be taking surreptitious glances throughout the day at the nearest television set, hoping that this is the long awaited new beginning.  The eternal optimist believes that there are good reasons to be hopeful at this time following the recent disasters in India and Bangladesh in the latter half of 2018.
