A New Area Canefield Settlement, East Canje Berbice hire car driver was yesterday charged with sexual assault committed on a minor when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
The charge against the driver, Nowrang Samaroo, also known as ‘Fenton’, was that on January 18, at Vryheid Public Road he allegedly touched a minor in a sexual manner.
The unrepresented man who appeared before Magistrate Peter Hugh, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was placed on $75,000 bail. He will return to court on January 29.
Samaroo who was wanted for questioning in relation to the allegation surrendered at the New Amsterdam Police Station on Monday.
A police source had told Stabroek News, that it was reported that on Friday, the high school student, 13, boarded the driver’s car as a passenger to be taken to her school. According to the report, the man then allegedly suddenly began to touch the student inappropriately and ripped her uniform in the process.
Stabroek News was told that in an effort to escape, the student jumped from the moving car.
She was picked up by a passing car which took her to the police station. Her parents were contacted and she was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
