Deputy Commissioner of Police Nigel Hoppie will act as the country’s top cop until the return of Police Commissioner Leslie James, who is currently overseas on duty.
This was confirmed by Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force Jairam Ramlakhan who told Stabroek News that Hoppie has been temporarily holding the posting since Monday.
James is expected to return in few days.
On August 30, last year, President David Granger appointed James as the Commissioner of Police.
On the said day, four Deputy Commissioners, including Hoppie were also appointed with immediate effect.
The three others are Lyndon Alves, Maxine Graham and Paul Williams. They are responsible for four areas of the police force: Operations, Administration, Law Enforcement and Special Branch/ Intelligence.
Hoppie heads the force Special/ Intelligence Branch.
