Eleven schools, along with surrounding communities on the East Coast of Demerara, will soon be benefitting from the services of a bookmobile that was commissioned yesterday by the National Library, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Georgetown.
Graham’s Hall Primary, Better Hope Primary, Enmore Primary, Mon Repos Primary, Chateau Margot Primary, Cummings Lodge Primary, La Bonne Intention Primary and St Paul’s Primary, along with Lusignan Nursery, Better Hope Nursery and West Road Nursery, as well as the communities in which the schools are located, are the areas which will be benefitting from the services of the bookmobile.
In addition to that, neighbourhoods not located near a branch library or library centre will also be visited. The plan is to visit these locations each month with allowances for additional visits based upon requests.
According to the President of the Rotary Club, the aim of the project is to improve literacy levels in Guyana and give the public easy access to reading.
The technology-filled minibus is equipped with over 3,000 books, four onboard laptops, a wireless printer and GPS tracking. While the initial cost of the entire project was reported to be over $23 million, the minibus will hereafter be maintained by the government. The bus is also expected to be equipped with mobile “hotspot” Wi-Fi capabilities.
Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, who was present at the event, hosted at the National Library, remarked that the willingness to serve the people by taking the service to the people is very important and rare and thanked the Rotary Club for their donation.
