As the police probe into the break-in at the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) office at Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara earlier this month continues, two persons were detained for questioning and subsequently released.
Contacted for a comment on the matter on Tuesday, Commander of ‘C’ Division Calvin Brutus told Stabroek News that the police are following all possible leads but have so far been unsuccessful.
He said the two were detained based on information received but were later released after there was no ‘credible” evidence linking them to the crime.
The incident had occurred around 1.30 am on January 8 during which three bandits carted off a metal safe containing $600,000 in cash.
The police, in a press statement, had said that the suspects allegedly first pounced on the two female security guards on duty and relieved them of a service revolver with six rounds and a cell phone.
“The perpetrators then reportedly took the guards to the back of the building, bound their hands and feet and returned only the weapon to them,” the statement added.
