Kuru Kuru man remanded on ganja farming charge

A  Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke-Linden highway resident was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with cultivating marijuana.

Gabron Williams, 22, was arraigned at the Linden Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Wanda Fortune. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded until February 8th.

Williams was arrested by police in Linden during a drug eradication exercise, which saw 13 acres of marijuana fields under cultivation being destroyed. He was reportedly found tending to the plants at one of the farms raided by the police.

Divisional Commander Linden Lord told Stabroek News that the eradication exercise was carried out on Wednesday, between 6 am and 1 pm at 8 Miles, Millie’s Hideout, Upper Demerara River.

Lord explained that ranks visited seven different fields, where approximately 15,000 plants, measuring between two feet and seven and a half feet in height, were found, along with 3,000 nursery plants. A total of fifteen kilogrammes of dried cannabis were also discovered on the farms.

In addition, five live 12-gauge cartridges, three 12-gauge cartridge shells and a .45-calibre spent shell were recovered from the camps. Others items, including utensils, make-shift beds and hammocks, were all destroyed along with the marijuana found.
