Om Singh, the Danielstown, Essequibo Coast resident who died on Sunday after he reportedly collapsed at the Anna Regina Police Station, where he was taken after allegedly assaulting his wife, died as a result of heart failure.
His brother, Suresh Praboonauth, confirmed the findings of the autopsy, which was conducted on Thursday.
Singh’s wife, who was taken into custody pending the findings of the autopsy, has since been released, a police source confirmed.
Commander of ‘G’ Division Khali Pareshram had explained to Stabroek News that around 11.30 pm on Sunday, ranks attached to the Anna Regina Police Station responded to a domestic violence report after Singh was accused of assaulting his wife.
As a result, Singh was escorted to the Anna Regina Police Station. He reportedly collapsed while in the Enquiries Office, Pareshram said. He was then rushed to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Praboonauth had said that his brother’s death came as a shock to the family since up to the time he was taken into custody he was healthy.
He said Singh and his wife, who shared five children, would often argue but the woman never reported any of the matters to the police.
On Sunday evening, Praboonauth said, it was a neighbour who summoned the police. He explained that Singh’s daughter accompanied her mother to seek medical attention and on the way their way back home she decided to check on him at the police station, where she spotted him lying on a bench.
After Singh’s daughter enquired about her father’s condition, Praboonauth said the police reportedly told her that he misbehaved and “they had to do what they had to do.”
