A police constable who has been identified as the rider of the motorcycle that was involved in the accident last Wednesday which claimed the life of pillion rider John Walcott along the Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara Public Road, is currently under close arrest.
Commander of ‘D’ Division Edmond Cooper told Sunday Stabroek that Constable Orin Parris, who is stationed at the Cove and John Police Station, East Coast Demerara and who allegedly fled the scene following the accident, remains under close arrest as the investigation continues.
The accident, which had occurred around 1.15 pm, claimed the life of 19-year-old Walcott, known as ‘Redman,’ a father of one, of Lot 3663 Westminster, West Bank Demerara.
The rider of motorcycle CH 4244 was negotiating a turn along the Sisters Village Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate, when he lost control, resulting in the motorcycle skidding. As a result, Walcott fell onto the road and his head was crushed by an oncoming fuel truck, GJJ 3746.
Parris, who was identified by witnesses, allegedly fled the scene.
The driver of the fuel truck was taken into custody and subsequently released on station bail.
Residents had recalled that they were alerted upon hearing screams. Upon checking, they saw Walcott’s lifeless body under the front wheel of the truck. His face was disfigured.
At the time of the accident, Walcott was still recovering from a previous motorcycle accident, which had occurred several months ago.
A cousin, Shondelle, had told this newspaper that during that previous accident, Walcott sustained life threatening injuries and his foot was almost severed.
