Family, Strike Team, Dream-Team and Ballers Empire, secured hard-fought wins, when the second Annual Mocha Village Cup Street-ball championships commenced on Saturday at the Mocha Arcadia Community Centre.
The large crowd which descended on the venue was treated to several hard-fought encounters. Family sent an early warning to the field as they recorded two wins on the night.
In their opening match, Family bested Big Ballers by a 2-0 score line on penalty kicks after regulation time ended scoreless.
They then returned later in the evening to squeeze out a penalty kick victory against Church Team by an identical score after normal time ended 0-0.
Similarly, Strike Force displayed their championship aspirations, needling Mature Ballers 1-0. Jermin Junior found the back of the net in the fifth minute.
Likewise, Dream-Team overcame Cricketers 1-0 compliments of a Dellon John conversion in the sixth minute. Meanwhile, Ballers Empire needled Overseas Bases Guyanese 2-1.
Nicholas DeSantos and Seon Alfred etched their names on the scorer’s sheet in the 15thand 16th minute respectively. For the losers, Darius Tumbler scored in the 17th minute.
In other results, 6-Stars battled past Front-side Warriors 1-0. Mervin Squires made his presence felt via a second minute effort. Also, Church Boys defeated Top Form 1-0.
Alwin DeMattos found the back of the net in the eighth minute. On the other hand, One-n-Move extinguished Hot Skulls 2-0 on penalty kicks after normal time ended scoreless.
The event which will be played in an initial round-robin format, will feature 16 teams battling for over $150,000 in prizes. Winner of the competition will pocket $100,000, with the runners-up slated to pocket $50,000.
On the other hand, the third and fourth placed sides will walk away with $25,000 and $10,000 respectively. The tournament continues at the same venue on Friday with another round of group matches.
